Luella Dobson Obituary

Luella “Gret” Dobson, age 96, of Reedsburg, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the Reedsburg Senior Life Center. She was born on November 10, 1922 in Lindina Township, Juneau County, Wisconsin, the daughter of William and Gertie (Hoile) Rose. She was married in 1939 to Bernard “Barney” Donovan. She later married Robert “Dobby” Dobson. She was the owner/operator of Barney’s Café for over 30 years.  Gret was an awesome cook and baker and was known in Reedsburg as “The Pie Lady”. She also worked at the Reedsburg Middle School cafeteria and the bakery at Viking Village until visual impairment made it difficult for her to continue work. In her 60’s she earned her brown belt in karate. Gret was a member of the Audubon Society and a bird watching group in the mornings. She also loved sewing and tailoring and was a beautiful seamstress. Her joy of singing led her to singing “gigs” in the Dells. She also loved her dogs, and feeding the squirrels. She was a long time member of the Reedsburg United Methodist Church, and singing in the choir for 25+ years. Gret was an avid Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cubs fan.

Gret was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Betty Lou Mundstock in 1986; her spouses; and brothers, Lloyd “Bud” Rose and Harry Rose, and sisters, Mae Alexander and Margaret “Peg” Curtis.

She is survived by her children, Mary Jane (Jerome) Thies and James (Brita) Donovan of Canyon Country, CA.; step-children Robert and Daniel; grandchildren Michael (Cathy) Mundstock, Robin (Dan) Ebelt, David Mundstock, Jennifer Shannon, Jeffrey Thies, Stephanie (Roger) Alvey; brother Robert (Dona) Rose of Mauston, and sister Vera Hanson of McFarland; many nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and a good friend, Pete Peterson.
