Anthony Stephen Matyas of Reedsburg, passed away in his home on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the age of 97.

Tony was born in Ashland, WI on January 21, 1929. He was a member of the Merchant Marines traveling throughout the Great Lakes. He later served in the United States Army for six years, including during the Korean War. He was an active member of the VFW 1916 in Reedsburg for many years.

Tony was a lifelong teacher with a passion for mathematics, retiring from Southwest Tech. He was an avid golfer and member of the Reedsburg Country Club. He played courses across the country and celebrated a hole in one twice over the years. Tony loved baseball, and despite his Wisconsin roots was a Cubs fan at heart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years Bernice (Fearing) Matyas, his sister Helen, his children Robert (Debra), Steven, and Ann Marie, as well as his step children Richard (Sue) Blakeslee, and Susan (Doug) Sherman; grandchildren Robert, Meaghann, Emily, Eric, Jaye, and five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and two sisters, his first wife Pearl (Wiberg) Matyas, his daughter-in-law Karen (Jesberger) Matyas, and stepdaughter Gina Blakeslee.

A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Reedsburg on Tuesday April 28, 2026 at 11:00 am with military honors to follow. Visitation will be held that morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the church. Luncheon to follow at the Reedsburg VFW Post 1916 at 12:30pm.
