Earl Steffen Obituary

Earl A. Steffen, age 74, of Mauston, WI, was born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin on November 17, 1949, to parents Albert and Alta (Rose) Steffen.  He was the fourth of eight children and was raised north of Reedsburg, and went to several one room country schools. He and his siblings shared many stories from this time in their lives.

Earl proudly served in the United States Army from December 1966 - December 1969. He first went to Germany where he taught other soldiers to operate patrol boats. He then volunteered for Vietnam where he ran those boats up and down the Mecong Delta.  He recently received a Quilt of Valor for his service in the war.  Upon returning home he remained in the Sauk and Juneau county area.

Earl worked various jobs in the area, Napa, Dells Lumber, Scott Construction, and did construction on his own. He then went to Big Joe Manufacturing where he worked for 30 years. He served in the union as steward and president which he enjoyed tremendously.

Earl was married in 1971 and this marriage was blessed with two children, Greg and Sarah.  Later in life on June 27, 2005, he married Ruth Kimball and he gained two stepchildren David and Leslie. Earl and Ruth lived outside of Lyndon Station in their peaceful country home. Earl was a horseman all of his life and made sure he had several at his home along with various other pets. He loved walking the woods, making furniture for family and friends, and remodeling his homes. He loved deer hunting and fishing and spending time with family and friends.  His other hobby was working on his antique cars. After retiring Earl and Ruth spent one wonderful winter in Florida as snowbirds, returning to live in Mauston.

Earl is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Gregory (Tracy) Steffen; daughter, Sarah Steffen, and stepdaughter, Leslie (Patrick Revering) Wrigley. He is also survived by siblings, Wayne (Beth) Steffen, Connie (Terry) Ryczek, Terry (Terry) Smith, Shelby (Ken Kaldenberg) Mitchell, and Dawn ( Chris) Linder. Brother-in-law, Richard (Carol) Kimball; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including a special cousin, Tom (Deb) Foss.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sister and brother-in-law, June (Glenn) Francois; brother, Arthur; brother-in-law, Jerry Mitchell; stepson, David Frodin, and another special cousin, Gene Rose
