Emily R. Rogers

August 3, 1966 ~ May 27, 2022 (age 55)

Wife. Mother. Sister. Friend. Teacher. Advocate. Confidante. Helper. Inspiration. Christian. Emily Ruth Rogers was all this and more. She taught so many so much, all of it based on faith, strength, hope, and love.

Emily was born August 3, 1966 to Rev. Henry and Barbara Behling in Lakefield, Minnesota. The fourth of five daughters, she was known for her beautiful brown eyes, genuine smile, and gentle spirit. Athlete, choir member, scholar, homecoming queen, she was active in school, church, and community events. She attended Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota and got her teaching degree in 1988. That summer she married Phillip Rogers, also a teacher, whom she had dated all through college. They moved to Inglewood, California for their first teaching Call.

Over the next 33 years they lived in other places: Wausau, WI, Winston-Salem, NC, and Reedsburg, WI. Emily taught elementary classes and the family was blessed with three children, Thane, Ian, and Grace.  In 2008 she was diagnosed with Devic's, an autoimmune-type disease. She was given a 3-5 year life expectancy, but her fighting and courageous spirit let her defy that timeline, and she had many wonderful years of seeing her family grow. She got to move Thane to Dallas in 2020; she got to go to Ian's college graduation from the University of Kansas, and a few months later to his wedding in 2021, and she was still fighting as Grace celebrated her high school graduation on May 27 of this year.  She never complained or bemoaned her condition; instead, she felt that God had truly blessed her by giving her a voice that encouraged and inspired others.

Her children are very much a result of her love and faith.  Grace related that every day Emily would ask how her day went, and was very interested in all the details of high school life.  Thane stated that she loved her family unconditionally, she continually displayed a positive attitude, that life was a celebration and not a time for mourning.  Ian talks of her unwavering perseverance and optimism, that she would never ever allow a negative view be proclaimed over her or any portion of her situation. She would always make the little things personal and meaningful: handwritten notes, tuning a conversation to show she cares, adding little notes with fun details that would make you smile. Emailing fun poems and creative storytelling just because. She knew exactly how to insert personal humor in a loving way to lighten up a conversation. She would listen in a way to feel heard and never feel rejected.

Emily's parents have been waiting for her in heaven and we know they are having a joyful reunion. Along with Phillip, Thane, Ian (Giselle), and Grace, she will be missed by her sisters Anne (Jeff), Karen (Jon), Valerie (Bruce) and Victoria (Mark), 13 nieces and nephews, and 8 great-nieces and nephews.

We thank the Lord that He had his arms around her all this time and allowed us to witness what a blessing she was to those she knew.
