Gilbert "Gil" Schulz Obituary

Gilbert J. Schulz, age 93, of Reedsburg, WI, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Casa de Oakes. He was born on November 14, 1927 in West Allis, WI, the son of the late Edward and Anna (Dettman) Schulz. Gil proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. On May 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Charlene Hawkins. This marriage was blessed with three sons, Robert, David and Michael.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Gil came home and joined his dad in the operation of Schulz Auto Sales. He took over the business upon his father’s retirement in the early 70’s. He was a member of NADA (National Auto Dealers Association) and WISCO. Gil continued to own and operate Schulz Automotive with his sons, David and Michael, and his grandson, Brady, until his health prevented him from working at the age of 85. Schulz Automotive is a four generation family business.  It was important to Gil to be a giving and active member of the community; something the family continues to do following in his footsteps.

Gil was a devoted Lutheran and his faith was always important to him.  He was an active member, and former council member, of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Reedsburg.

Outside of work, Gil devoted his life to his family, especially his grandchildren, who completely adored him.  Gil was an avid fisherman enjoying fishing and boating and trips to his cabin in the north woods. He will be remembered for being a patient and kind man.

Survivors include his sons; Robert (Song), David (Betsy), and Michael (Kathy); grandchildren; C.J., Julia (Daniel), Jonathan, Nicholas, Kelly (Blake) Kochendorfer, Kristen (Nathan) Newell, Jenna, Brady(Jamie), and Tori (Andy). His great-grandchildren:  Alysa and Daniel Jr., Sloane and Ari, Lincoln and Luke, and Gracelyn and Ella. He is also survived by his brother, Glen Schulz, special friend Barb Baesman, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded by his wife, Charlene, on September 4, 1993; his father, Edward; mother, Anna; step-mother, Grace; and his sister, Ruby Kinser.

Funeral services for Gilbert Schulz will be conducted Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at 12:00 PM, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Reedsburg.  Reverend Paul Crolius will officiate.  Visitation will be on Wednesday morning from 10:00 am until the time of service at the church.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
