Gregory Jon Schmidt

Gregory Jon Schmidt, age 72, of Reedsburg, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison after a long battle with COVID-19. He was born on July 25, 1948 in Reedsburg, WI, the son of Gerhardt and Leona (Kropp) Schmidt. On February 14, 1987 he was united in marriage to LaVonne Wheeler.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Rock Springs.

Greg graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working full-time throughout his college years. He used his dairy farming background and lots of hard work to build a successful duck farming business.  Greg’s entrepreneurial spirit was easy to see – he loved building homes and apartment buildings, including his own home and Rob and Christy’s home. Painting apartments was one of his favorite retirement hobbies, not only because he loved seeing projects finished, but also because it combined two loves of his life: his work and his wife, LaVonne. 

Greg loved riding ATV’s and fishing—when they were biting.  Greg loved time spent with family and grandkids playing cards and games.  Greg’s grandchildren warmly remember him as “Papa.”  Greg and LaVonne spent much of their retirement years traveling in long, cross-country trips that were always planned around which casinos LaVonne hoped would be the luckiest stops.  Greg will be dearly missed.

Greg is preceded in death by his first wife Carol Frick, and his parents Gerhardt and Leona Schmidt.

Greg is survived by his wife LaVonne of Reedsburg; daughter Christy (Rob) Rudolf of McFarland; step-children Wendy (Dan) Krolikowski of Reedsburg, and Craig Henke of Reedsburg; grandchildren Allison, Megan and Jack Rudolf, and Dane, Elliot and Gwen Krolikowski; brother Gordon (Ruth) Schmidt of Wonewoc, nephew Matt Schmidt of Wonewoc, nephew John (Katie) Schmidt of Plain, niece Rebecca (Mark) Gustafson of Monticello, along with other relatives and friends.

Visitation and funeral services for Gregory Schmidt will be conducted on Monday, December 28, 2020 at St. John Lutheran Church in Rock Springs. Visitation will start at 9:00 A.M. and the funeral service will start at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor David Karow officiating. Burial will follow services at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Wonewoc.  In lieu of flowers, memorials of remembrance may be made to St. John Lutheran Church of Rock Springs.
