Jerona Rykunyk Obituary

Jerona (Jaye) Rykunyk, 77, of Reedsburg, passed away Monday, August 11, 2025.

Jaye was born in in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, raised in Luverne, MN and later, Conway, AK, at age 18 Jaye embarked on adult life leading her to Key West, FL and eventually to St. Paul, MN settle and become involve in her labor union, Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees (HERE) Local 17 and HERE International. Jaye’s life was rooted in in her union and making changes to benefit both her fellow members and the industry. During her time in the union she met her first husband, Michael, who passed away less than a year into their marriage. In her career at HERE, Jaye achieved the role of Principal Office of HERE #17, leading with a fierce and protective advocate for those she represented. She negotiated and prevailed in improving wages, benefits and working conditions not only for her members but employees throughout the industry. Jaye held many positions within her local and various other labor organizations. Jaye was recognized for her strong leadership and success many times throughout her career.

Jaye and Dick lived in Reedsburg WI where over the years they traveled, motorcycled and camped across all of North America. They built up their home and meticulously maintained gardens on a property where their dogs roam free among the birds and other wildlife that brought Jaye so much joy. Jaye preserved her many memories by authoring numerous books about their trips, family and her pets she so adored. Jaye was an avid birder who travelled the world seeking out and photographing elusive species. Jaye’s life was made whole by her many friends and family in her life. Jaye found fulfillment in friends, especially Desiree King, Laurie Fossen, Liz Stephens and Cathy Pickel. Jaye also immersed herself in the lives of Dick’s children Amy and husband Dave (Kuta) and Matt and Heather Anfang, their kids Alexandra, Madeline, Leah, Erin and Meredith, newborn great grandchild Kaleb and cared deeply about all of them.

In addition to her loving husband Richard (Dick) Anfang, she is survived by her sister Miklen Rykunyk, uncle John Ryan and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Mychas (Mike) and Helena (Helen)  Rykunyk, and first husband Michael Shotland.

Dick expresses his gratitude to Agrace Hospice Services and the very special friends and family that supported Jaye in her final days. A Celebration of life will take place at Mancini’s Char House 531 7th St W, St Paul, MN 55102 on September 24, 2025 from 5- PM.
