Joyce I. Hartzell

Joyce Irene Hartzell, age 91, of rural Rock Springs, Town of Freedom, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2022 at Casa de Oakes in Reedsburg.  She was born on January 12, 1931, the daughter of Arthur and Elsie (Genske) Meyer. 

On June 28, 1952, Joyce was united in marriage to Donald L. Hartzell at the Church of God, Reedsburg.   This marriage was blessed with three sons.  Joyce was employed as a Legal Secretary at Vaughn Conway for 23 years.  She was the Clerk of the Town of Freedom for over 28 years, and a member of the Rock Elm Homemakers for over 50 years. Joyce was a life long member of the Church of God in Reedsburg where she served as Church Treasurer for over 40 years.  Joyce’s church and faith were a very big part of her life.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and solving crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dr. Glenn Arthur Meyer; sisters, Ada Ilene Grover and Owida June Meyer in infancy.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Donald; sons, Donald Jr. (Sue) Hartzell of Anderson, IN, Steven (Rae) Hartzell of Rock Springs, Jeffrey (Elaine) Hartzell of Rock Springs; grandchildren, Amy (Seth) Price, Jill (Brian) Niswonger, Ryann Hartzell (Abraham Mamo), and Andrew Hartzell; great-grandchildren, Carleigh and Coen Price, Emerson and Charles Niswonger; sister-in-law, Tizza Meyer of Dousman; special nephew, Biff (Faye) Grover of Ripon.

A celebration of life for Joyce Hartzell will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the Church of God in Reedsburg with Pastor Debbie Sammons officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M until the time of the service. Private family burial will take place at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery, North Freedom. Memorials of remembrance may be made to the Church of God, Reedsburg, in lieu of flowers.
