Lawrence Geitz Obituary

Lawrence “Red” Geitz, age 89, of LaValle passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Case De Oakes Assisted Living in Reedsburg, WI.  He was born October 6, 1934 in Wauzeka, WI to the late Charles and Clara (Manglos) Geitz.

On July 31, 1965 he married Helen Hamburg at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Reedsburg.  They were blessed with the adoption of two daughters.  They made their home in LaValle and were married for 43 years until Helen passed away in 2009. He was proud to call the Village of LaValle home for over 80 years.

Red joined the Marine Corps and served his country from 1953 to 1957.  He was stationed in California and Hawaii, working as a flight radar technician and deeming himself the “Hollywood Marine.” He became a lifetime member of the Eagles Nest Detachment #1293, and enjoyed participating in many of the detachment activities, including rose drives, highway clean up, marching in local parades, and the general “Marine camaraderie.”

He worked most of his life driving truck, starting with Reuben Hartje Trucking and Korth Transfer hauling milk, ending his career with 30 years of long-haul over-the-road trucking with Grede Foundry/Rock Transfer. After retiring from trucking he worked for five more years at Walmart aka “Wally World,” enjoying the social interaction with all.

Most of all, Red enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was proud to let everyone know that both of his daughters became RN’s—or as he liked to call them “Rotten Nurses.” He looked forward to the annual fishing trip to Chetek with all the guys and playing cards with family and friends. Being blessed with the gift of gab and a unique sense of humor, his biggest enjoyment came from socializing with all of his brothers, Marine Corps friends, family, and neighbors.

Over the years he was active in his community, serving as a trustee for the Village of LaValle, helping with the LaValle Community Action Club, and serving for more than 30 years as a volunteer fire fighter for the LaValle Fire Department, and a member of the LaValle American Legion Post #242.

Survivors include daughters Kristin (Frank) Gronemeyer of Colfax, Wi and Julie (Pete) Krueger of LaValle; grandchildren Candice Corey (Brandon King), Alex (Jenessa) Gronemeyer, Caleb (Margaret) Gronemeyer, Tori (Dylan) Vanguard, and Rachel Gronemeyer; three great-grandsons,  Zander Adkins, Zayven Corey and Harvey Gronemeyer; brothers Ervin “Woody” Geitz, Eugene “Whitey” (Karen) Geitz, John (Marie) Geitz, and sister Norma (Craig) Scott, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by wife, Helen; grandson-in-law Bob Corey, great-granddaughter Zoey Corey, sister-in-law Dorothy Geitz, and all of his wife Helen’s siblings and their spouses.

A special thanks to Casa De Oakes staff, Agrace Hospice, and “bonus daughter” Kris Backeberg for all of their assistance and support in caring for Red.
