Martin Bulin Obituary

Martin Joseph Bulin, of rural LaValle, passed away on February 14, 2024, at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center. He was 92 years old.

Martin was born on May 15, 1931, to parents Wencle “Jim” and Angela (Rott) Bulin. He grew up on the family farm, surrounded by a large, close-knit family during the Great Depression. His youth taught him to be practical and find joy in those around him.  He graduated from Cazenovia High School in 1949. During his years there, he played baseball and fell in love with the love of his life, Lavonne Wells. They were married on March 7, 1951, and raised four children together, living in the same hills and valleys where Martin spent his youth.

When God made a farmer, it was Martin he had in mind. He took care of the family farm for most of his long life.  Aside from working long hours in the fields and the barn, he found time to tap trees for maple syrup, plant potatoes and sweet corn and pick fruit from berry bushes and apple trees. Even after he “retired” from farming, he could be found on the tractor or on a four-wheeler, helping where he could.

He became a cornerstone of the family and the community. The home he built was often host to family gatherings, with family from out of town always having a place to stay. His ham became something of a family legend, as did the stories he loved to tell. He could be found volunteering at the annual Cazenovia Celebration and served on several local boards. His advice was sound.

Martin was proud of his Czech heritage and enjoyed connecting with family in the Czech Republic. He had an easy-going manner and a compassionate heart. Never one for idle hands, he was constantly on the go and ready to help anyone in need.  There was always an extra seat at his table and a welcoming smile for a friend of the family—whether he’d known them for ten years or ten minutes.

Martin is survived by his three sons-- Gary (Carol) Bulin, of Cazenovia, Dale (Lisa) Bulin and Richard (Donnella) Bulin of LaValle; nine grandchildren—Ernest (Krystal) Bulin of South Dakota, Tim (Rita) Bulin, Bob (Jenny) Bulin and Ted Bulin of Cazenovia; Carrie (Nathan) Heiking of Lime Ridge; Mindy (Nick) Clardy of Louisiana, Miranda (Jeremy) Powell, Mia Bulin and Marshall Bulin of LaValle. A sister--Virginia (Delmar) Hannah of Missouri; two brothers—Donald (Lois) Bulin of LaValle and Elgin (Shirley) Bulin of Baraboo; brother-in-law Dan Kershner of LaFarge. Twelve great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and special friend Barbara Devault.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavonne; a daughter Bonnie Bulin, his parents Jim and Angela, sister Beverly Kershner, father and Mother-in-law Edgar “Ted” and Mattie Wells; Brothers-in-law (and wives) Fay (Josephine) Wells and Alton (Anne) Wells.
