Master Sergeant, Steven W. Whitney, Retired Obituary

Master Sargent. Steven William Whitney Retired, born November 25, 1949, in Reedsburg, WI, passed away on March 11, 2025, at age 75 and is peacefully at rest. He was the beloved son of Lorraine (Brennan) Whitney and William (Bill) Whitney and was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary Whitney, and his sister Linda (Don) Schultz.

Steven’s spirit of adventure was forged in his childhood, growing up in Reedsburg with his siblings and friends. Whether it was harmless mischief, exploring the outdoors, or pushing the limits, he lived for excitement—a trait he carried into his 34 years of military service.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War as an Aviation Ordnance man (AO) aboard the USS Oriskany, loading aircraft with ammunition and standing by for takeoff—a job which gave him his hearing loss but would never trade for anything. His service took him around the globe, including the Philippines, Japan, and Germany, further fueling his passion for adventure. Always thoughtful of others, Steven purchased many cultural souvenirs as gifts during his travels, many of which have become cherished family heirlooms. He later served in the 105th Cavalry Regiment and Army National Guard, simultaneously building a successful career as an owner-operator truck driver.

Steven embodied independence and determination in all he did, from serving his country to rebuilding a beloved truck affectionately known as “The Beast,” in which he patiently taught Jennifer how to drive stick shift. Since 2003, he and Tanya enjoyed retirement by Lake Virginia in the home of Steven’s parents, which they lovingly renovated.

Steven was a devoted father, loyal friend, and captivating storyteller with an incredible memory. He could recount detailed historical facts, tales from his military service, youthful escapades, and even a few humorous run-ins with the law. Those lucky enough to know him enjoyed his sharp sense of humor and mischievous nature—crafting homemade potato guns, secretly test-driving his grandson Leo’s electric cars before wrapping them as Christmas presents, or delivering a perfectly timed dad joke.

Summers were Steven’s favorite time, filled with annual camping trips with family and close friends. He eagerly anticipated yearly visits to Reno, Nevada, reconnecting with his brothers, family and friends and participating in E Clampus Vitus ("Clampers"), a fraternal organization preserving the history of the Western United States, mixed with plenty of desert shenanigans every July.

Steven and Tanya also shared a love for NASCAR, traveling to Daytona, Chicago, and other tracks to experience the excitement firsthand. Even when not attending in person, Steven never missed a Sunday race.

Steven is survived by his wife, Tanya Whitney; his daughter, Jennifer Whitney (Ryan Marshall); and his two grandsons, Leo (8) and Nolan (7 months), who sparked his youthful side. He is also survived by his brother, David Whitney (Annette), his nephews, Shawn Whitney, Aaron Whitney, and Matthew Schultz, niece Katie MacAskill, parents-in-law Richard (Donna) Rick, their family, and many more cherished relatives and friends.
