Steven Wayne Carnell, 78, of Reedsburg passed on Saturday May 10, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Tomah, WI after a short battle with cancer.

Steve was born May 3, 1947, in Milwaukee, WI to John and Florence (nee Knutson) Carnell. He served in the Navy and was honorably discharged after serving in the Vietnam War.

In 1975, he married Frances Abfall and were married for 39 years before her death in 2014. Four children blessed this marriage: Karl (Candace) Berna of Baraboo, Peter (Nicole) Berna of Merrill, WI, Charles Carnell of Wis Dells and Nora (Jason) Carnell of Reedsburg. He was further blessed by grandchildren: Zachary, Caitlin, Zoe, Rebecca, Orion, Ahron, Abbagail, Andrew, Eliot and 7 great grandchildren. He is further survived by his sister Colleen Dodge of Oakley, CA.

He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, and his grandson Alexander.

Early in life Steve liked to cook. None of his kids will forget his red beans and rice. He worked in the maintenance of a few factories. But he always came back to cooking. He tried his hand at owning a pizzeria for a few years but soon went back to cooking for others. As life started to slow down and the passing of his wife, he enjoyed people watching as they walked past his house.

The family of Steve would like to thank The VA Hospice Care Unit in Tomah, WI for their compassion, love and care during his final days especially RN Natalie.

Military rites are scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 12:30 pm at the Veterans Memorial in Nishan Park, Reedsburg. A celebration of life will follow from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm at the Raupp Farm (S3093 Hwy 23 Baraboo).
