Thomas Duren Obituary

Thomas Robert Duren, born December 14, 1945, went to be with his Lord and Savior after battling ALS for over 20 years. Even though his body was wearing down, he still enjoyed finding fun things to do with family and friends. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at the age of 80.

Tom was the son of Robert and Connie (Thornton) Duren. He was the middle child in a family of 5. He was raised on the family farm outside of Cazenovia.

Tom married his high school sweetheart, Marion Phillips, on July 24, 1965. They were blessed with 2 children, Jeffrey Thomas and Julie Helen, 5 grandchildren Jade (Alex), Moser, Connor, Corey and Jordan; 3 great grandchildren, Oliver, Blayz and Greyson. Tom and Marion were married for 60 years.

Upon graduating from Weston High School in 1964, Tom moved to Madison to work as a parts delivery man for Cirves Electric. He ultimately started an electrical apprenticeship and graduated with honors in 1972 from Madison Area Technical College and received Apprentice of the Year Award. As a member of Local 159 IBEW, Tom continued to work as a Journeyman Electrician and Foreman for the next 41 years in various Madison electrical companies. After working for Hill Electric, Inc. for 31 years, Tom retired December of 2007.

After retirement, Tom kept busy with many projects that included gardening and managing a local farm owned by some dear friends.

Tom loved his family and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren….they were all a blessing.

Tom was known as Mr. Fix It, his family always came to him for assistance. His daughter summed it up when she gave him a t-shirt that stated “The Man, The Myth, the Legend”.

Tom was an avid small and big game hunter. He enjoyed many Canadian fishing trips with his buddies. He also enjoyed numerous camping trips with his family. After the family was grown, Tom and Marion continued to travel to many wonderful places which included Europe, Hawaii, Eastern and Western U.S. States, Alaska, and Jamaica. They also enjoyed a variety of cruises to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska.

Tom was survived by his wife Marion, son Jeff, daughter Julie (Chris), grandchildren, Jade (Alex), Moser, Connor, Corey and Jordan, great grandsons, Oliver, Blayz, and Greyson. His brother Rich (Carol), Frank (Debbie), sister-in-law Karen; brother-in-law Ed; and many special nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. A special thank you to Loretta for her extraordinary comfort and support to our family.

Tom was proceeded in death by his father and mother, Robert and Connie; sister Judy; brother John; and godson Paul.

A special thank you to the St. Croix Hospice Team and their incredible support assisting us through this difficult journey.
